As a menstruator for over 7 years, and having dealt with period cramps through each cycle, I am a pro when it comes to concoctions and age old remedies that will guarantee a smooth ride through turbulent weather.
1. Turn up the heat
If you didn’t already know, heating pads are a boon! Topically applied heat is proven to be as effective as ibuprofen for menstrual cramps. The heating pad reduces the constriction of blood vessels and improves blood flow to the uterus. So curl up, and bid farewell to those period pains.
2. Add magnesium to the mix
Beans, nuts, brown rice, whole wheat bread, dry almonds and all those leafy greens are magnesium rich foods. Magnesium is proven to help relieve cramps, so alternate those junk food cravings with something healthier and you’re guaranteed to be feeling better in no time. Additionally, dark chocolate is loaded with magnesium too.
3. Drink up
Drink water, lots of it. It helps ease bloating, and so it helps ease cramping. Not only will water zap away period pain, it’s also great for your skin, and metabolism.
4. Engage the core
Contrary to what you may think, exercising during is actually great for you. We’re not asking you to hit the gym with a hardcore routine, but you need to break a sweat. Exercising during your period will combat not only cramps, but also PMS and will regulate irregular periods. If you’re too lazy to drag yourself to the gym, you can watch some at-home workout videos, or do yoga.
